Piccadilly Basin scoops office award

BDP Architects Manchester studio, based at 11 Ducie Street, has won 'Best Corporate Workplace' at this year's British Council for Offices (BCO) Northern Awards ceremony. The BCO Awards promote excellence and best practice in office design.

The building, forming part of Town Centre Securities PLC's award winning Piccadilly Basin mixed-use development, was also nominated for the BCO's national innovation award. The winner is due to be announced in October 2009.

Designed by BDP Architects for their own occupation, the property was the first naturally ventilated, commercial building in Manchester to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating for environmental sustainability. The carbon neutral development, located where the Rochdale and Ashton canals converge and within close proximity of Manchester Piccadilly railway station, is also home to a 'living roof to support the habitat of the protected-species Black Redstart birds resident at the Basin.

Richard Dunn from Town Centre Securities commented "we are delighted that the BDP Manchester studio has won this prestigious accolade. It is a fitting reward for a true team effort. Together we have delivered an iconic building that is not only setting the standard for sustainability but is also bringing regeneration to Manchester city centre and facilitating a new way of working in the fantastic surroundings for BDP"

Winning the prestigious BCO Award follows on from the office buildings recent success in Manchester City Council's "Built in Quality" Award scheme.
